Vancouver Countertops

Vancouver Countertops

Vancouver kitchens come in more shapes than almost any other Canadian city. A 1928 Kerrisdale Tudor, a 1960s Mount Pleasant box, a glass-walled Yaletown loft, a brand-new Cambie laneway home — they all share the same regional climate but they ask very different things of a countertop. Alpine Countertops has been fabricating granite, quartz, marble, quartzite, and porcelain surfaces for Vancouver homes since 2015. Every slab is templated digitally, cut at our Richmond fabrication facility, and installed by our own crews — not subcontractors. We are BBB A+ accredited, carry over 100 colours and patterns in stock, and most projects are completed in two to three weeks from template to final installation.

How Vancouver kitchens are different

You can read a Vancouver address from the countertop almost as easily as from the curb. On the West Side — Kerrisdale, Shaughnessy, Dunbar, Point Grey, Arbutus Ridge — heritage Tudors, Craftsmans, and Edwardians dominate, often paired with classical interior renovations. White and grey-veined quartz (Calacatta-pattern Caesarstone, Silestone Eternal) and honed marble vanity tops are the default, chosen to read calm and timeless against shaker cabinetry and traditional millwork.

Cross to the East Side and the rules loosen. Mount Pleasant infill homes, Commercial Drive renovations, and Hastings-Sunrise rebuilds favour bolder choices: dramatic dark quartzite islands, leathered granite, deep-veined patterns, and warmer tones that pair with walnut, oak, and coloured cabinet fronts. Many of these are open-plan kitchens carved out of original 1920s and 1940s footprints, so the island often becomes the centerpiece.

Downtown is its own world. Yaletown, Coal Harbour, West End, and Olympic Village condos are typically smaller, more linear, and more demanding on slab consistency — bookmatched veining looks fantastic next to floor-to-ceiling glass, and a thinner 2cm profile or mitred waterfall edge reads cleanly in a modern tower. We see plenty of Dekton and ultra-compact surfaces in these projects because they can be fabricated thinner without compromising strength.

Vancouver’s wet, mild climate also shapes material thinking. Constant humidity and salt-laden coastal air make sealed natural stone a more attentive choice than it would be in a drier prairie city, and outdoor kitchens — common on Vancouver patios — push us toward UV-stable porcelain or Dekton rather than indoor-grade quartz.

Cabinet trends drive countertop choice as much as architecture does. Vancouver has shifted heavily toward two-tone kitchens — a coloured perimeter with a contrasting island — which puts more pressure on the island slab to read as a deliberate statement. We spend a meaningful portion of every consultation talking about how the island top will look against the perimeter cabinet colour, the backsplash, and the flooring underfoot.

Materials we fabricate for Vancouver homes

We fabricate every major hard surface category, and we recommend based on your space, your habits, and your aesthetic — not on what we have the most of in the warehouse.

  • Quartz — engineered stone from Caesarstone, Silestone, Vicostone, Hanstone, OmniaQuartz, Cambria, and Firstone. Non-porous, never needs sealing, and the most forgiving choice for a busy Vancouver family kitchen. Pattern range is enormous, from soft Calacatta whites favoured on the West Side to dramatic dark veining popular East Side.
  • Granite — natural stone with strong heat tolerance and a depth of pattern engineered surfaces still cannot match. Best for cooks who want a one-of-a-kind slab and don’t mind annual sealing.
  • Marble — Carrara, Calacatta, Statuario, and similar. A West Side and downtown classic for vanities, fireplaces, and feature islands. Will etch with acids (lemon, wine, vinegar), so we have a frank conversation about lifestyle before recommending it for a primary kitchen.
  • Quartzite — natural stone with quartz-like hardness. Reads like marble but performs much closer to granite. A frequent answer for clients who want the marble look without the etching risk.
  • Porcelain and Dekton — ultra-compact, heat-resistant, UV-stable, and available in large-format slabs. Ideal for outdoor kitchens, fireplace surrounds, and contemporary towers where a thin profile matters.

For a deeper comparison, see our guide on quartz vs. granite for Vancouver kitchens, and our companion piece on how to clean and care for quartz countertops. We also publish current trend coverage in our 2026 Vancouver kitchen countertop trends article, which is updated each year.

Edge profiles matter too. Vancouver’s contemporary projects favour eased or square edges, often with a 2cm mitre creating the visual weight of a thicker top without the cost of a full slab. Heritage and traditional renovations more often request a full bullnose, ogee, or bevelled edge to match older trim and millwork. We profile every edge in-house at Richmond, which means the finish you see in the showroom is the finish that arrives at your address.

Our process — template to installation

Every Alpine project follows the same proven sequence. It starts with a free in-home consultation where we measure your space, look at your cabinets, lighting, and sightlines, and bring physical samples to your kitchen so colours can be judged in your own light. Once you’ve selected your slab, we book a digital laser templating visit — typically once cabinets are installed and the sink is on site. Laser templating captures every angle, scribe, and out-of-square wall to within a millimetre.

From there, your slab is fabricated at our Richmond facility. We cut, polish, mitre, and finish on our own equipment, which means no third-party shop is in the loop and nothing is lost in translation. Edge profiles, sink cut-outs, faucet holes, and seams are all dialled in before delivery. Installation is handled by our own trained crews, who scribe to walls, level, seam, and silicone on site. Most kitchens are installed in a single day, and total turnaround from template to install is two to three weeks.

Because every step happens under one roof, change requests are easier. If your designer wants a different edge profile after seeing the slab in your space, or a faucet relocation comes back from the plumber, we make the adjustment in our shop rather than coordinating across multiple subcontractors. That’s the practical benefit of fabricating in-house. Vancouver countertop FAQs

Which countertop holds up best in a busy Vancouver family kitchen? For most families we recommend quartz. It is non-porous, never needs sealing, resists staining from coffee and wine, and the pattern range now closely mimics marble and natural stone. If you cook with a lot of high heat, granite or quartzite are stronger heat performers.

Will marble work in my Kerrisdale or Shaughnessy kitchen? Marble is gorgeous and historically appropriate for these homes, but it etches with acids (citrus, wine, vinegar) and develops a patina. We will install marble for clients who want that classic look and accept the patina; if you want the look without the maintenance, quartzite or a Calacatta-pattern quartz is a closer match than people expect.

Do you do downtown high-rise installations? Yes — we install regularly in Yaletown, Coal Harbour, and West End towers. We coordinate building access, elevator booking, and concierge logistics, and our crews are experienced with strata buildings.

How long does the full Vancouver project take from first call to installed kitchen? Most projects run two to three weeks from the digital templating visit to installation day. Before templating, we typically need one to two weeks for the in-home consultation, slab selection, and finalised quote — so from your first call, plan on roughly four to five weeks for a standard kitchen if your cabinets are already on site. Heritage projects and complex bookmatched islands can run slightly longer.

Do you fabricate bathroom vanities and outdoor kitchens as well as main kitchens? Yes — vanities, ensuite countertops, fireplace surrounds, outdoor BBQ counters, and commercial reception desks are all part of our regular work. For bathroom vanities we frequently recommend marble or quartz; for outdoor installations we recommend porcelain or Dekton because of UV stability. See our product range and design gallery for examples.
