Over the past year, clients visiting our Richmond shop have started asking two questions we never used to hear: “Is quartz being banned?” and “Is my countertop giving off silica?” The short answers are no and no — but behind the questions sits the biggest change in engineered stone since quartz overtook granite. Here is what changed, who was at risk, how the brands we carry responded, and what to check before ordering quartz for a 2027 project.

Why is the quartz industry removing crystalline silica?

Traditional engineered quartz is typically more than 90% crystalline silica — quartz itself is a crystalline form of silica — bound with polymer resin. Cut, ground, or polished dry, a slab releases very fine respirable silica dust. Breathed in over time, it causes silicosis: an incurable, progressive scarring of the lungs. Agencies such as NIOSH and OSHA frame this risk entirely around the people who fabricate, finish, and install the stone.

The scale of the worker problem became impossible to ignore. A 2026 study in NEJM Evidence identified 592 silicosis cases among California engineered-stone countertop workers between January 2019 and June 2026, including 65 lung transplants and 31 deaths. Regulators responded — OSHA began focused inspections of fabrication shops in 2023, and Australia went furthest — and manufacturers re-engineered their recipes. That is why “silica-free quartz” exists: shorthand for engineered surfaces that keep the look and workability of quartz while swapping crystalline silica for other minerals and, in several lines, recycled glass.

Who is actually at risk — fabrication workers or homeowners?

This is the most important distinction in the story, and the one most often mangled online: silicosis is an occupational disease of fabrication workers, caused by respirable dust from cutting, grinding, and polishing. It is not a hazard of living with an installed countertop. A finished surface releases dust only when it is abraded — food prep, cleaning, and daily kitchen use do not do that. Canada’s national occupational health body, CCOHS, identifies workers who process the material as the at-risk group; consumers with installed tops are not listed as an exposure group.

The clearest signal: Australia, which banned engineered stone outright, explicitly left every installed benchtop in place. If installed quartz were a household hazard, removal would have been mandated. Instead the law regulates only the dusty work of repairing, modifying, or removing a top — exactly where the risk lives.

Did Australia really ban engineered stone?

Yes. From 1 July 2024, every Australian state and territory made it an offence to manufacture, supply, process, or install engineered-stone benchtops, panels, and slabs — defined as artificial stone containing at least 1% crystalline silica by weight. It was a world-first workplace-safety law, and Safe Work Australia is clear about its boundaries: already-installed benchtops stay, and their repair, minor modification, or removal is allowed under controlled-processing rules. Imports of engineered-stone benchtops, slabs, and panels were banned from 1 January 2025, and stronger dust rules now apply to work with any material over the 1% threshold.

Is quartz being banned in Canada or the United States?

No — and jurisdiction matters, so here it is precisely, as of August 2026. In Canada and BC there is no ban and no product restriction. WorkSafeBC treats silica as a workplace exposure: shops that process stone must run exposure control plans and wet methods, rules in force since 2017. We have found no BC or federal move toward a product ban.

In the United States there is no federal ban either — OSHA enforces its silica standard and has inspected fabrication shops since 2023. California is the jurisdiction to watch: it adopted a permanent, stricter silica standard for engineered-stone work in late 2024, and in May 2026 its Standards Board voted to direct drafting of an emergency rule that would effectively prohibit fabrication and installation of engineered stone over 1% crystalline silica. That proposal is advancing but is not law as of August 2026 — and either way it is a California fabrication rule, not a Canadian one, and touches no installed countertop anywhere.

One Canadian footnote: HanStone is manufactured in London, Ontario by Hyundai L&C Canada — the only quartz-surface plant in Ontario — which shortens its supply chain into BC even though the brand has announced no reformulated line as of August 2026.

Will silica-free quartz look or perform differently?

The manufacturers say no. Caesarstone states there is no visible difference between the CSF versions and the original engineered-stone versions of the same colours, and Cosentino claims Silestone XM matches the physical and mechanical performance of what it replaced. Those are manufacturer claims, passed along as exactly that — independent long-term field data does not exist yet. Our advice: view a full slab of the actual new-formula product rather than an old sample chip, and ask how the warranty reads. What does the shift mean if you are planning a 2027 kitchen?

Practically, four things. First, availability: based on what manufacturers have announced, more of the quartz wall at any Metro Vancouver dealer will be low-silica or silica-free versions of familiar colour names by 2027. Second, ask which formulation you are getting — colour names carry over, so the same name may exist in both recipes during the transition.
