When should you start planning countertops for a 2027 kitchen renovation?

Earlier than most renovation checklists suggest — not because countertops take long to make, but because the decisions stack in a fixed order. You cannot template until base cabinets are installed and level. You cannot book a template date with confidence until you have chosen a fabricator. And a fabricator cannot quote accurately until you have settled on a material and, ideally, a slab. Each step waits on the one before it, so a late start compounds.

Here is the back-planning timeline we walk clients through, working backwards from install day. These windows are our shop’s typical experience, not industry statistics — complex layouts, full-height backsplashes and peak-season bookings all run longer.

The seasonal wrinkle: fall is our crunch. September through November fills with homeowners racing the holidays, and we expect 2027 to bring the same squeeze. If a pre-Christmas kitchen matters to you, work the timeline so you are templated by early November 2027. If your date is flexible, January through early spring is usually the quieter, easier stretch in our booking calendar.

What does the countertop decision checklist look like?

Ten steps, in the order they actually need to happen.

1. Pick your completion date and work backwards. Use the timeline table above. If the math says you should have started already, compress the research phase — never the fabrication window.
2. Set a budget framework from current prices, not predictions. Base it on today’s Metro Vancouver ranges — our countertop cost comparison keeps the current numbers — and hold a contingency rather than betting on forecasts. What might move prices next year is a separate question, covered below.
3. Shortlist two or three materials, not one. Start with our materials comparison and our take on the best countertop materials for Vancouver kitchens. A shortlist keeps you flexible if your first-choice colour is back-ordered or the quote lands high.
4. Decide how trend-driven you want to be. The NKBA’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Report points to warm whites and earth tones as the leading countertop colour direction, and based on what we see in the shop we expect that to carry into next year — though no 2027 study exists yet, so treat every 2027 trend list, including our own 2027 trends outlook, as an informed extrapolation. 5. Understand what is changing under the hood. The industry is reformulating engineered stone to remove crystalline silica. This is a worker-safety issue about dust in fabrication shops — not a hazard of the countertop installed in your home. Australia banned new engineered-stone work in July 2024 (installed benchtops stayed in place); Canada and BC have no ban as of August 2026. Caesarstone says it aims to make its entire portfolio crystalline-silica-free by the end of 2026, and Cosentino says its Silestone XM collections are capped at a maximum of 10% crystalline silica — both manufacturers describe looks and performance as unchanged, a claim no one has independent long-term data on yet. 6. View the actual slab before you commit. A sample chip cannot show how veining travels across three metres, and tone varies batch to batch. Ask to see your slab — or at minimum a full current slab of the colour — at the yard or the shop.

8. Lock your template date early. Two to three weeks from template to install is typical for us, but the calendar slot itself is the scarce resource — especially in fall. Booking the slot is free; losing it to indecision is not.
9. Finalize every cutout before template day. Sink model, cooktop, taps, soap dispensers, edge profile. Changing a sink after template can mean re-fabrication and real delay — it is the most common self-inflicted schedule wound we see.

How should you budget for countertop prices in 2027?

We do not publish price forecasts — anyone handing you a percentage for 2027 is guessing. What we can name are the pressures we are watching from the buying side of the counter:

• Currency. Most slabs sold in BC are imported and effectively priced in US dollars upstream, so CAD/USD movement flows into slab cost — in either direction.
• Freight and energy. Ocean freight and energy-intensive manufacturing (sintered surfaces especially) are real input costs whose direction nobody can promise.
• Trade measures. As of 15 August 2026 the United States has a new four-year safeguard tariff-rate quota on imported quartz surface products, following a US International Trade Commission injury finding. It is a US import measure: it does not tax slabs entering Canada, Canada is excluded as a source into the US, and Canada has imposed no similar duties as of August 2026. Whether it indirectly reshuffles global slab flows or pricing here is genuinely unknown.
• Reformulation. Pricing on the new low-silica and silica-free lines is still settling; ask for current quotes rather than assuming a premium or a discount.

The practical takeaway from our side: waiting for prices to drop rarely pays off in this trade — you usually just lose the calendar slot. What questions should you ask a countertop fabricator?

Whoever makes your shortlist — including us — these six questions separate a professional shop from a middleman:

• Do you fabricate in your own facility, or broker the cutting out?
• What is your current template-to-install lead time — and what do you expect it to be in the season I am booking?
• How will seams and veining be laid out, and can I approve the layout before cutting?
• What dust controls does your shop run — wet cutting, CNC, extraction? With the industry’s silica reformulation underway, it is a fair question of any shop. In ours, cutting is done wet on CNC equipment.
• Is the quote itemized — cutouts, edge profile, tear-out and disposal, plumbing disconnect and reconnect?
• Are you registered with WorkSafeBC and insured for work in my home?

How far in advance should I book a countertop fabricator in Vancouver?

In our shop, template to install typically runs two to three weeks — but that is the end of the process, not the start. Choose your fabricator six to eight weeks before you want the install so quoting, slab confirmation and scheduling are not rushed, and add margin in fall, when September-to-November bookings crunch ahead of the holidays.

When is the best time of year to install countertops in Metro Vancouver?

Based on our booking patterns, late fall is the busiest and least flexible stretch. January through early spring is usually quieter — easier scheduling and more time at the slab-selection stage. The stone itself does not care what month it is; the calendar does.

Will quartz countertops still be available in 2027?

Yes. Canada and BC have no ban or restriction on engineered stone as of August 2026. What is changing is the recipe: manufacturers are shifting familiar colours to low-silica and silica-free formulations, and they say looks and performance are unchanged. Expect more of the quartz wall at any Metro Vancouver dealer to be the newer versions by 2027.

Can I replace countertops without renovating the whole kitchen?

Usually, yes. If your base cabinets are sound and level, a fabricator can template over the existing layout and swap the tops. One safety note: removing or cutting an old engineered-stone top generates silica dust, so have that done by professionals using wet methods and dust controls — it is not a DIY job.

Should I pick my countertop before or after my cabinets?

Decide the material and thickness while your cabinets are being designed, because overhangs, support and appliance fit depend on them. The physical template, though, only happens after base cabinets are installed and level — so the final measurement always comes late in the build. Plan the decision early; expect the measurement late.
