Granite Countertops Surrey

Granite Countertops Surrey

Granite still has a strong place in Surrey kitchens, and the homeowners choosing it know exactly what they want. Granite countertops deliver something engineered surfaces cannot: every slab is a one-of-a-kind cross-section of a quarry, with mineral movement, depth, and natural variation that no factory can replicate. In Surrey’s traditional and transitional kitchens — the heritage homes of Cloverdale, the established family neighbourhoods of Newton and Fleetwood, and the larger detached builds across South Surrey — granite reads as an investment in a permanent, character-rich surface. Alpine Countertops has fabricated granite for Metro Vancouver homeowners since 2015, and Surrey is one of our most active service areas.

Why granite works in Surrey kitchens

Granite suits a particular kind of Surrey home. Heritage character houses in Cloverdale, established family kitchens across Newton, Fleetwood, and Whalley, and bigger transitional builds in Sullivan Heights and Panorama Ridge all benefit from granite’s mineral depth. Where a quartz slab gives you a uniform pattern and engineered consistency, granite gives you a one-off — golds and tans threaded through black, dramatic veined blacks with copper flecks, mid-tone greys with feldspar movement, or warm browns that pull cabinetry tones forward.

The functional case is just as strong. Granite is a quarried natural stone that handles direct heat better than any engineered surface. A pan straight off a gas burner can sit on granite without scorching the slab. For Surrey families cooking real meals from scratch — Newton households running a multi-burner Saturday breakfast, Cloverdale heritage kitchens with cast-iron at the centre of every dinner — that heat tolerance matters. Granite is also extremely hard. It resists chipping and edge damage from normal kitchen use, and the polish holds for decades.

The trade-off, and the one piece of homework granite asks of you, is sealing. Because granite is a natural stone with microscopic porosity, it needs a penetrating sealer applied at installation and refreshed periodically — typically every 6 to 12 months depending on the slab’s density and the volume of cooking. Sealing is a 15-minute job. We send you home with the right product and instructions, and we will reseal on a service visit if you would rather not handle it yourself.

Granite brands and options at Alpine

Granite is sold by quarry name and slab rather than by manufacturer brand the way quartz is, but Alpine works with the importers Metro Vancouver designers actually source from. Our Richmond facility carries slabs across the price and visual spectrum, and we will route in slabs from supplier yards across the Lower Mainland to match a specific look:

  • Black granites — including absolute blacks, granites with subtle gold or copper flecks, and dramatic veined blacks. Strong choice for statement Surrey islands and Cloverdale heritage kitchens with white or cream cabinetry.
  • Tan and gold granites — warm earth-tone slabs with mineral movement that complements oak, walnut, and warm-painted cabinetry. Popular in Newton and Fleetwood family kitchens.
  • Grey granites — mid-tone slabs with feldspar movement, suitable for transitional kitchens that want natural stone without high contrast.
  • Brown and bronze granites — deep, rich slabs that anchor a darker palette and read traditional in older Surrey homes.
  • Exotic and bookmatch slabs — for Morgan Creek and South Surrey builds where the island is the visual centre of the room. We can pair slabs from the same block for waterfall ends.
  • Margranite and Firstone — among the importers and brands we routinely fabricate.

Slab selection happens in person — granite is too variable to choose from a sample. We schedule yard visits for Surrey clients to see full 9-by-5-foot slabs under proper light, and we tag the specific slabs with your name before fabrication. If you are still weighing material, our quartz vs. granite breakdown covers the practical differences. The products and suppliers page has more on the manufacturers we work with.

Granite care in Surrey’s climate

Granite needs more attention than quartz, but the routine is simple once it is set. Daily cleaning: warm water, mild dish soap (or a stone-safe spray cleaner), and a soft cloth. Avoid generic all-purpose cleaners with high pH, lemon-based products, vinegar, and abrasive scrubbing pads — these can degrade the sealer over time.

Sealing: granite needs a penetrating sealer applied roughly every 6 to 12 months. The interval depends on the density of your specific slab (denser, darker granites can go longer; lighter, more porous slabs need more frequent attention) and your kitchen’s volume. The water-bead test is the simplest check: drop a few water beads on the surface; if they soak in within a couple of minutes, it is time to reseal. Surrey’s damp winters are gentle on sealed granite — humidity does not affect a properly sealed slab. Pricing — what affects granite cost

Granite pricing in Surrey is driven mostly by the slab itself. Unlike engineered quartz, where two slabs in the same colour from the same brand are priced identically, granite is quarried — rarity and origin matter. The variables we work through on a Surrey quote:

  • Slab grade and rarity — common domestic granites sit at one tier, while exotic Brazilian or Indian quarry slabs sit higher.
  • Slab size and quantity — Surrey islands often need two or three slabs.
  • Edge profile — eased and straight are standard; ogee, mitred, and full bullnose add fabrication time on natural stone.
  • Cutouts — undermount sinks, gas cooktops, prep sinks, and integrated drainboards each add labour.
  • Backsplash — full-height granite splash uses significantly more material than 4-inch.
  • Initial sealing and removal of the existing top.

Every quote is itemized in writing with the specific slab named. For supporting context on stone pricing, see our cost guide.

Our process — template to installation

Surrey granite installs follow a workflow tuned for natural stone. After your in-home consultation, we book a slab selection visit at the importer’s yard so you can choose the actual slabs that will end up in your kitchen — we tag them on the spot. Templating happens at your home with laser digital tools, usually within the first week after cabinets are set.

From template to installation, plan on two to three weeks. Slabs are cut, edged, polished, and sealed at our Richmond facility, with seams pre-fit before delivery. Install day is typically a single visit — our crews remove the old surface, level cabinets, set the slabs, seal seams, apply the initial penetrating sealer, and finish silicone work at the splash. Alpine fabricates and Alpine installs. The same crew through the entire job.

FAQs

How often does granite need to be sealed? Roughly every 6 to 12 months for a typical kitchen, depending on the density of the slab and your cooking volume. The water-bead test is the quickest check — if water beads sit on the surface, the seal is intact; if it soaks in within a couple of minutes, it is time to reseal.

Can I put hot pans directly on granite? Yes. Granite is a quarried natural stone and tolerates direct heat without scorching or discolouring. We still recommend a trivet for cast-iron straight off a high burner — partly to be cautious, partly to protect the sealer at the contact point.

Will granite chip on the edges? Granite is very hard and resists chipping in normal use. Heavily mitred edges and aggressive ogee profiles can be more vulnerable than eased or straight edges. We will recommend the right edge for your slab type at template.
